Fibre-reinforced polymer composites are widely used in today’s aerospace, green energy, marine, and transportation industries, because of their high specific strength and specific stiffness in comparison with those of conventional materials. Over years, significant advances have been made in developing manufacturing techniques from traditional low-cost wet-hand-layup to automated ones such as VARTM and ATPs for value-added applications of fibre-reinforced polymer composites as primary/main frames or secondary structures of transportation vehicles. This talk highlights the development of advanced composites in the past half-century addressing the processing-structure-property relationship of composites. It also articulates some recent development of composite materials and structures with multi-functionality using micro-/nano-additives for addressing some associated issues and challenges.

澳大利亞技術科學與工程院院士,悉尼大學宇航、機械與機電工程學院院長,國際著名的力學專家,德國洪堡學者。擔任澳大利亞國防科學技術研究院航空結構及發動機損傷力學專家中心主任,澳大利亞先進復合材料結構工業合作研究中心專家小組成員,亞澳復合材料協會主席等職務。主要研究領域包括復合材料科學與技術、智能材料與結構、納米材料及納米復合材料、結構完整性與耐久性等。已出版著作6部,發表SCI收錄論文380余篇,他引超過10000次,現擔任國際期刊Composites Science and Technology,Journal of Composite Materials,Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology等編委
